How to travel to York
York is perfectly placed in the heart of the UK, with direct rail links to London, Edinburgh and Manchester in around two hours.
By car, the A1, M1 and M62 are around 30 minutes away, giving direct access to the North, South and West of England.
Regional buses provide regular services to the Yorkshire Coast (Scarborough and Whitby), plus Hull and Leeds
The nearest international airport is Leeds Bradford, which is less than an hour away by car.
Travel to York by train
Being a ‘railway city’ York is well easy to get to by train. Services are frequent and connections many.
Less than two hours from London, Edinburgh or Liverpool, letting the train take the strain is probably the best option for people staying more than one day.
Park & Ride
For day trippers, Park & Ride is one of the easiest ways to travel in and out of York. It avoids driving through the narrow and often busy streets.
There are six different routes, allowing easy access to the city from all major roads.
Best car parks in York
Car parking in York is not cheap and roads can get very congested – especially in the run-up to Christmas.
We would recommend using the Park & Ride for day trippers and the train for longer stays.
However, there are plenty of parks around the inner ring road – which basically follows the route of the city walls.
Best airports to fly into York
Leeds Bradford Airport
The closest airport to York is Leeds Bradford – LBA. It is less than an hour away by car. However, there are no direct buses or trains to it and flights are mostly European.
Manchester Airport
Manchester – MAN – the only airport with a direct rail service – TransPennine Express train. It takes around two hours, with no changes, making it easily accessible. In addition to Europe, there are also direct flights to America.
